Between 1960 and 1968, the US launched Operation Chrome Dome. Whilst the operation was meant to be a nuclear deterrance strategy against the USSR, it led to unforeseen accidents involving nuclear bombs. There were fourteen total accidents, known as Broken Arrow incidents. Delegates will be trying to resolve the 1966 Palomares incident. On January 17th, 1966, a B 52G bomber collided with a KC 135 tanker, dropping 4 thermonuclear bombs on and near the small agricultural village of Palomares, Spain. Delegates are tasked with determining what to do about the four missing and/or exploded bombs, as well as the consequences such as PR and political fallout, environmental damage, and radiation contamination. This committee will take place in 1966 and the few years following as delegates handle the difficulties of locating and dealing with the missing bombs.
