The world is currently facing an unprecedented threat to public health through the spread of illicit narcotics and the misuse of prescription drugs. In this committee, the World Health Organization will address the nefarious growth and encroachment of Central American cartels, along with the international Opioid Epidemic that takes hundreds of thousands of lives annually. Delegates must collaborate, accurately portraying their respective nations, in order to diminish loss of life, and improve quality of life as it pertains to narcotics. Mexican cartels, including the Sinaloa Cartel, CJNG, and the Gulf Cartel, control an estimated 30-35% of Mexican territory and generate hundreds of billions in illicit drug trade revenue, allowing them to influence politicians and evade law enforcement. The peak of drug-related homicides in Mexico reached 33,341 in 2018, highlighting the violence tied to cartel dominance. Opioids, which include substances like fentanyl and morphine, contribute to a global crisis affecting 60 million people, with over 100,000 overdose deaths annually. The crisis stems from systemic regulatory failures and the pharmaceutical industry's profit motives, particularly in the United States. Countries like Guyana, Bolivia, and the Dominican Republic also face high opioid-related death rates, while the UK leads in opioid consumption.
